How many photos should a photo dump have?

By · Updated · 3 min read

Ten photos is the sweet spot for a photo dump. Six is the shortest length that still holds an arc with an opener, a breather, a loose slide and a closer, and Instagram allows up to 20 on most accounts. Go longer only when every extra slide adds something new.

How many photos should a photo dump have?

What is the best number?

Ten for most people. It is long enough to feel like a sample of a week and short enough that most viewers reach the end. It also matches the older Instagram limit, so it works on every account, and it leaves room for each role in an order: an opener, a calm slide, energy slides, details, one loose frame and a closer.

Think of ten as a default, not a rule. A two-day trip may need six. A wedding weekend may earn fifteen.

What is the minimum?

Three photos is the smallest set Strewn will accept, since a dump needs a few photos to have an order. For a satisfying arc, aim for six or more. Strewn's rules show why. It places a deliberate chaos slot only when the dump has six or more slides, uses a breather only with three or more, and a closer needs two. Below six, the structure thins out.

If you only have four good photos, post a small set, or add a collage image as a fifth slide.

What is the maximum?

Instagram lets carousels hold up to 20 items on accounts that have the update, and some still see 10. Check the limit guide if yours stops early. Strewn mirrors the numbers: up to 10 slides on the free plan and up to 20 with Pro.

Does a longer dump get more views?

There is no public proof either way. What is clear is how people behave: every swipe loses a few viewers, and a long run of similar frames loses more. A dump of ten distinct photos usually holds attention better than twenty with repeats. Treat length as an editing decision, not a reach tactic.

How do I choose length by occasion?

Use this table as a starting point:

OccasionSlidesWhy
Regular week7 to 10A short sample of ordinary life
Weekend trip8 to 12A few places and a few meals
Longer vacation12 to 18Chapters of four or five slides
Birthday or party8 to 12People, food, one loose shot
Month recap10 to 20One high point per week

How many photos should I start with?

Start with two to four times the slides you want. For a ten-slide dump, collect 25 to 40. That gives you room to cut near-duplicates and weak frames without feeling forced. Strewn lets you pick between 10 and 60 photos for exactly this reason, and it chooses the slides from your pick.

Photos beyond the slide count wait in the Set aside tray marked Over the count. They are not deleted from anywhere, and you can bring any of them back.

How do I cut down a big pile?

A practical order of cuts:

  1. Remove blurry photos that are not on purpose.
  2. Fold bursts. Keep the sharpest frame of each.
  3. Cut photos that repeat a subject you already have.
  4. Cut photos that need an explanation to make sense.
  5. Keep one loose frame, then check the count.

What about chapters in long dumps?

Past twelve slides, think in chapters of four or five photos. Give each chapter its own small high point and a calm slide at the end, so the swipe resets before the next section starts. This keeps a long post from going flat in the middle.

What if I have fewer photos than I wanted?

Then post fewer. A seven-slide dump with strong variety is better than a twelve-slide one padded with leftovers. If you plan to post weekly, a short week can be short. The habit matters more than the length, which is the idea behind the weekly routine.

What do the numbers look like in practice?

Look at how a ten-slide dump uses its slides. One is the opener, one is the closer, one is a breather, one is the loose frame, and the remaining six share the work of details and energy. Remove any of the first four and the shape suffers. Remove two of the six and nobody notices. That is why dumps shorter than six feel thin and dumps longer than twelve feel padded: the middle is where flexibility lives.

If you have to choose between adding a slide and improving one, improve one. A better opener helps more than an eleventh photo.

Does the free plan limit hurt?

Ten is the free limit in Strewn, and it matches the length most dumps should be. If you want longer sets, Pro raises the limit to 20 and adds more layouts. The pricing page lists what each plan covers, without prices, which appear in the app from the App Store.

How do I know when to stop adding?

Swipe through your draft and notice the first slide where your attention slips. Cut from that point, or make that slide better. If nothing slips, you may have something worth extending. If you are checking the clock, the dump is already too long.

How does the order change with length?

Short dumps drop the loose slide and some middle roles. Long dumps stretch the alternating middle between the same opener and closer. The order guide shows the full ten-slide template and what changes at five and twenty.

Frequently asked questions

How many photos should be in a photo dump?

About ten. Six is a practical minimum for a real arc, and 20 is the usual ceiling on Instagram.

Can a photo dump have just 5 photos?

Yes. It will have an opener, a breather, middle slides and a closer, but no deliberate loose slide.

How many photos should I pick before editing?

Pick two to four times your target slide count so you have room to cut.

Is 20 photos too many?

Not if each adds something. Most viewers drop off along the way, so use chapters and keep variety high.

What is the least photos Strewn accepts?

Three. For the full story arc, six or more works best.
