Vacation photo dump ideas that tell the trip
A vacation photo dump should tell the trip in about ten to fifteen slides: one vivid opener, a sense of place, food, people, small details, a loose candid and a calm closer from the last evening. Shoot variety on purpose, then cut hard, since a trip produces hundreds of near-duplicates.

What should a vacation photo dump include?
Six kinds of photos cover most trips: a signature place, food, people, transit, small details and quiet scenes. The signature place gives the post a postcard. Food and people show how the trip felt. Transit photos, such as a train window or a boarding pass, give a sense of movement. Details, such as tiles, signs and shadows, add texture. Quiet scenes give the eye a rest.
Many travel dumps fail by showing only the signature place from ten angles. Variety is what makes the swipe work.
What should I shoot each day?
A simple daily checklist:
- One wide shot that sets the place.
- One meal or drink.
- One portrait or a candid of someone you are with.
- One detail: a door, a sign, a pattern.
- One photo of a thing that went slightly wrong.
- One quiet shot at the end of the day.
How do I order a trip dump?
Keep the days in the order they happened, then use the arc rules at the edges. Open with the most vivid photo of the trip, whatever day it came from. Close with a calm shot from the last evening or the trip home. The middle can follow the clock, so the viewer experiences the trip as a journey.
This hybrid is covered in the order guide. In Strewn, choose A trip as the period when you start the dump, use the Timeline vibe for the base order and then swap your favorite frame to slide 1.
How do I sort 400 photos into ten?
Do it in passes, each with a single question:
- Pass one: cut blurry and accidental photos.
- Pass two: fold bursts and near-twins, keeping the sharpest.
- Pass three: keep one photo per place or moment.
- Pass four: choose the opener, closer and loose frame.
- Pass five: fill the middle by alternating bright and calm.
Can an app do the first passes?
Strewn can do the first pass. You pick 10 to 60 photos with the system picker, so for a large trip, choose your best 60 by day first. Strewn reads sharpness, light and color on your iPhone, folds near-duplicates into the Set aside tray and proposes an order with a reason for each slide. It does not upload anything. See the order feature.
It is in development and not on the App Store yet, so the manual passes above are the method for now.
How long should a vacation dump be?
Ten to fifteen slides suits a week. A weekend wants eight to ten. A month-long trip deserves two or three dumps, one per leg or one per week, not a single twenty-slide marathon. If you want to compress a whole trip anyway, think in chapters of four or five slides, each with its own high point.
Instagram allows up to 20 items on most accounts, as discussed in the photo limit guide.
What about captions and locations?
A simple caption works: the place, the dates, three words. Adding a location tag helps people searching that place. Skip details you would not announce in person, such as your hotel name and exact times while you are still there. Posting after you leave is a cautious habit many travelers keep.
What photos work as a chaos slot on a trip?
A blurry tram, a crooked skyline, an accidental self-portrait on a bus, your shadow on a wall. Pick one that still carries a feeling. It tells viewers the trip was lived, not staged, and it lands best near slide 4. Strewn picks the loosest readable photo for that spot when the dump has six or more slides.
Should I make a collage Story as well?
It helps. Post the carousel as the keepsake and a 9:16 collage as a teaser. A Scatter layout feels like a pile of postcards, which suits travel. See the Stories guide for layouts and sizes.
What privacy habits should I keep on a trip?
Do not post boarding passes with barcodes, passports, hotel keys or screens with account details. Crop or skip them. Photos carry Exif metadata, which can include location, and social apps typically strip it on upload, but it is still wise to avoid sharing originals by direct message when you do not need to.
