How to organize your camera roll on iPhone

By · Updated · 4 min read

Organize an iPhone camera roll in three short passes: delete the obvious misses, favorite the keepers, then sort what is left into a few albums. Photos has tools for each step, including the Duplicates album, Recently Deleted and albums sorted by date, so a first cleanup fits in an hour.

Where do I start?

Start with a goal. Free up space, find photos faster, or prepare a set for posting. Each goal changes the order of the work. For storage, begin with videos and duplicates. For finding things, begin with albums and Favorites. For a post, begin with a trip or a week and ignore the rest.

A small first win helps. Open the Recents album and look at the last week. Delete the misses, favorite the best three, and you have already improved the part of the library you use most.

What are the three passes?

Do them in this order:

  1. Delete: remove screenshots you no longer need, blurry misses and obvious duplicates.
  2. Favorite: tap the heart on photos you want to find again.
  3. Sort: put what remains into a few albums by event, trip or theme.

How do I find duplicates and screenshots?

In the Albums tab, scroll to Utilities for Duplicates and, in Media Types, for Screenshots, Screen Recordings and Videos. Duplicates needs iOS 16 or later and is described on Apple's support page. Merge keeps the best copy and moves the others to Recently Deleted. The full steps are in the duplicates guide.

Sort Videos by size in a third-party view or check iPhone Storage in Settings if space is the goal, since a few long clips can outweigh thousands of photos.

What albums are worth making?

Fewer than you think. A small set beats a hundred folders you never open:

  • One album per big trip or event.
  • A Favorites album, which already exists.
  • A Keep for posting album where you drop candidates.
  • A Receipts and documents album for practical photos.
  • A Family album for the people you photograph most.

How do I sort by date?

The Library tab groups by Years, Months and Days, and albums have a sort option for newest or oldest first. For a post, pick the period, select photos with Select and a drag across a day, and add them to an album. The select-many-photos guide shows the gestures.

How does the camera roll relate to a photo dump?

A tidy roll makes a dump faster, but you do not need to clean first. Strewn uses the iPhone photo picker, which shows your whole library to you, and reads only the photos you pick. Pick the week, up to 60 photos, and Strewn will propose an order and fold near-twins into Set aside. Nothing in your library is changed or deleted. See how Strewn handles photos.

How often should I tidy?

A short weekly pass beats a yearly marathon. Five minutes on Sunday with Recents is enough: delete misses, favorite keepers. If you also make a weekly photo dump, the selection step is the cleanup. The two habits feed each other.

What should I never delete in a hurry?

Photos of documents, receipts and anything with sentimental value that exists nowhere else. Recently Deleted keeps items for 30 days, which gives you a safety window, but do not rely on it for a mass deletion. Check iCloud Photos syncing before you remove anything you may want on another device, since deletions can sync everywhere.

Do I need a cleaner app?

Not necessarily. Photos covers duplicates, favorites, albums and storage. Third-party cleaners add swipe-to-delete flows and similar-photo detection, which some people find faster. Read what permissions they ask for and what they do with your data before you grant access.

How do I handle screenshots?

Screenshots pile up quickly: tickets, directions, conversations, recipes. Open Albums, scroll to Media Types and tap Screenshots. Select a whole screen of old ones with a drag and delete in batches. Before you delete, save the ones that matter to a Keep album, such as a ticket you still need. This single album is often the fastest way to recover a lot of space and visual clutter.

What about Live Photos and burst photos?

Live Photos store a short clip with each picture, so they take more space. If you do not need the motion, open the photo, tap Edit and turn Live off, or switch Live Photos off in the Camera. Bursts are saved as a stack. Open the stack, tap Select and mark the frames you want to keep. The rest can be deleted in one tap.

Burst mode) is the usual source of near-duplicates that Photos does not call duplicates.

How do I handle photos from messaging apps?

Chat apps can save every photo they receive. Check the settings of each app for an option to save to Photos automatically, and turn it off if you do not want it. Then clear the existing pile in the Recents album, where those saved images appear mixed with your own. A quick pass through the last three months usually removes hundreds.

How do I find photos fast later?

Use Favorites for the best, albums for events and the Search tab for people, places and text in photos. Photos can search by a place name, a date or an object. A small amount of effort now makes search results better, because a tidy library has fewer irrelevant matches.

What is a sensible routine for the first hour?

Try this order and stop when the hour is over:

  1. Ten minutes: delete screenshots and obvious misses from the last month.
  2. Ten minutes: open Duplicates and merge exact copies.
  3. Ten minutes: favorite the best of the last three months.
  4. Fifteen minutes: create albums for the two biggest trips or events and move photos in.
  5. Fifteen minutes: check iPhone Storage and decide on large videos.

What if my library is huge?

Work in time slices. Start with the current year, then the one before, and stop when it stops being fun. Nobody needs to finish ten years of photos in a weekend. The recent year is where you search most often, so it gives the biggest return. Older years can wait until you have a reason, such as a trip anniversary or a yearly dump.

How can I keep it tidy?

Delete bad shots at once, turn off Live Photos when you do not need them, and favorite the good ones as you go. Set a monthly reminder to look at storage. The habit is small, and it keeps the library from reaching the point where a cleanup feels impossible.
